Institute of Pharmacy, Jalpaiguri has come a long way till today. Municipal Commissioners, Jalpaiguri approved the idea of a Medical School at Jalpaiguri (Memo no 656 dated 24th March, 1920). Jackson Medical School was established by the British rulers in 1927 (Memo No 3351 dated 18th December 1926) and the old building was constructed in 1930. Licentiate Medical Faculty (L.M.F.) course was start in between 1930-1932. The independent Government turned down the medical school in 1949, with the abolition of L.M.F. course and established the Pharmacy Training Center on 5th September, 1949. Hence one of the first Pharmacy Institute of India was established at Jalpaiguri in the year 1949 offering Licentiate in Pharmacy (L. Pharm) course after introduction of Pharmacy Act 1948 by independent Govt. of India. Dr. B.C. Roy, The themfarsighted Chief Minister of West Bengal realized the importance of Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Sciences, and in his entire endeavor he got full help and cooperation from Dr. Charu Chandra Sanyal, one of his most beloved students, who was not only and eminent physician but a man with profound knowledge on local medicinal plants. Later in 1954 two years Diploma in Pharmacy (D.Pharm) course was started by the West Bengal Government and training Center updated as Institute of Pharmacy, Jalpaiguri. Long after, in 2003, the four years Bachelors of Pharmacy (B.Pharm) course was introduced in this institute.
